The Kansas City Chiefs got an early jump on the new league year, as ESPN is reporting that right tackle Jawaan Taylor will be released to free up to $20 million in salary cap space.
Monday morning’s report suggests that Taylor will be released just before the start of the new league year March 11, unless a trade can be worked out. The 28-year-old Taylor had one year remaining on his four-year deal that was worth $80 million. While he was seen as a much-needed veteran presence and pass blocker on the offensive line, Taylor was perhaps more known for his multiple penalties. He was flagged 49 times in the 45 games he appeared for the Chiefs, the most of any lineman during the past three seasons.
The move comes as the Chiefs are looking to free up cap space in an effort to regroup after last season’s disastrous 6-11 campaign. In the past month, the Chiefs also released defensive end Mike Danna while restructuring quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ contract. The Chiefs entered the offseason exceeding the salary cap by $57 million.
