The first reading of an ordinance amending water and wastewater rates in the City of Boonville was read during the City Council’s meeting on Monday, March 2nd.
The proposed rates in listed in the city’s Schedule of Administrative Fees and would take effect April 1st if approved by council. The new water service rates include minimum monthly charges that vary depending on meter size, including $36.05 for the smallest meters and $871.60 for the largest (six inch) meters for the first 1,000 gallons of water consumed. Those rates scale the more water is consumed per month, including $9.95 per 1,000 gallons for the next 9,000 gallons, $7.75 per 1,000 for the next 40,000 gallons, and $7.12 per 1,000 for anything beyond that. The wastewater sewer rates have also been updated and include a fixed charge per month of $27.20 per meter, plus $10.17 per 1,000 gallons of metered wastewater a month. Users outside the corporate limits of the city will be charged twice the regular rate. Overall, residents will see about a three percent increase if the rates are approved.
Prior to the first reading of the ordinance, several residents voiced their opinions, expressing their disapproval over the new rates. Several city council member echoed that sentiment, stating that many residents in their wards have urged them to vote against the increase. Other members argued that delaying the increase could hurt the community more than help it, especially if there is a major expense that could set the city behind.
Second reading and an official vote will take place during the council’s next meeting on Monday, March 16th. The updated fees have been made available for public inspection on the city’s website.
