Marshall Public Schools Superintendent Caleb Petet met with members of the Marshall City Council during a work session Monday night to discuss the status of the real estate transfer agreement between both entities.
The agreement, passed in March 2024, transfers most of the former Marshall Habilitation Center campus to the school district in exchange for the former Eastwood Elementary School campus. Petet tells KMMO News he met with the council to get an update on the status of the former Habilitation Center property.
Petet says Marshall Public Schools is ready to convey the Eastwood property to the city, but the agreement is contingent on both sides “cleaning up” their own sites before the transfer. He notes that deadline is fast approaching.
Petet also suggested acquiring easements on the property to construct bus lanes to move buses even when traffic is congested around the property. He says Marshall Public Schools is willing to compromise with the city to meet the deadlines in the agreement.
During the work session, council members expressed interest in touring the site to get an idea of the work that still needs to be done. No formal action was taken by council members during the meeting.
Council members also discussed the proposed ordinance regarding fees for third party review, inspections, and associated services. The council had a lengthy discussion about publishing a yearly fee schedule, but no consensus was reached. The Code and Finance Committees do plan to hold a joint meeting in the future to further discuss the issue.
The next regular meeting of the Marshall City Council will be held Tuesday, March 17th at 6 p.m.
