The westbound lanes of Interstate 70 outside Mayview have reopened after a four-vehicle collision Thursday, Mar. 19 claimed the life of a truck driver from Georgia.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the crash occurred at 1:45 p.m. at mile marker 46, as traffic was slowing on the approach to a work zone. Troopers say a truck driven by a 43-year-old man from Georgia had attempted to avoid another truck, but instead struck the vehicle. That caused the second truck to roll into the path of a sedan driven by a 26-year-old Columbia man, and struck a third truck, causing it to overturn. The Georgian’s truck went into the median, where troopers pronounced him dead at the scene.

The sedan from Columbia also went into the median, and its driver sustained serious injuries. One of the other truck drivers, a 41-year-old man from Virginia, also suffered serious injury, while the third driver, a 70-year-old man from Alabama, incurred minor injury. All three were taken to a Kansas City area hospital. Traffic in both directions was stopped for six hours before crews were able to reopen the interstate to eastbound traffic. Westbound I-70 reopened early Friday morning.
