Carlos Estévez had a season debut he’ll want to forget, as he allowed all six runs, including a walk-off grand slam to Dominic Smith, in the Kansas City Royals’ 6-2 loss at the Atlanta Braves on Saturday, Mar. 28.

Estévez came on to pitch the ninth, having the cushion of Salvador Perez’s solo home run in the seventh inning and a fielding error bringing home Maikel Garcia in the eighth. He ran into trouble quickly, walking leadoff hitter Drake Baldwin and allowing a single to Matt Olson. After getting a pop out, former Royal Mike Yastrzemski lined a single to center field to score Atlanta’s first run. Another walk loaded the bases, setting up the game-tying single by Michael Harris II. Smith’s grand slam to right center field ended the game and gave the Royals their second loss of the young season.

Estévez, who recorded a career-high 42 saves last season in 67 appearances with an ERA of 2.45, saw his season begin with an ERA of 162. The loss also squandered a quality start from Michael Wacha, who had allowed just three hits and a walk in six innings, striking out seven. On offense, Jac Caglianone had two of the Royals’ five hits.

The Royals look to avoid the sweep Sunday afternoon when Seth Lugo gets the start against Grant Holmes. First pitch is at 12:35 p.m., with pregame beginning at noon on KMMO AM 1300.
