The St Louis Cardinals saw a sizable lead evaporate in the top of the ninth, but JJ Wetherholt saved the day with a walk-off grounder to right field that brought home the game winner in the Cardinals’ 6-5 extra-innings victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday, Mar. 28.
The Cardinals took advantage of a walkoff single from Griffin Jax to Jordan Walker, after the Rays had scored their leadoff runner in the top of the 10th. Victor Scott II delivered a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners, setting up Wetherholt’s game-winning single on the first pitch. The single proved to be the second blown save for Jax in as many games, who took the loss.
The Cardinals’ heroics were set up by a sub-par performance in the ninth inning from Matt Svanson, who allowed three runs on two hits and one walk, prompting Ryne Stanek to come in. Stanek allowed the tying run to score on a full-count single by Nick Fortes, followed by leadoff RBI single in the tenth by Yandy Díaz. Stanek then picked up a pair of strikeouts and a pickoff to escape the inning and ultimately claim the win.
Starter Michael McGreevy kept the Rays hitless in his six-inning start, striking out five while allowing just a pair of walks. The Cardinals provided run support early, with RBI singles in the first from Alec Burleson and Nolan Gorman, followed in the eighth by an Iván Herrera double and sacrifice fly by Burleson.
The Cardinals will look for the sweep Sunday afternoon when Dustin May gets the start against former Cardinal Steven Matz. First pitch from Busch Stadium is at 1:15 p.m.
