Five hits from Yandy Díaz, including one of Tampa Bay’s four RBI doubles, prevented the St Louis Cardinals from claiming a season-opening sweep Sunday, Mar. 29, with the Rays wrapping up their trip to Busch Stadium with an 11-7 win.
Tampa Bay struck first, with Jonny DeLuca delivering an RBI double, then scoring on a wild pitch by Cardinals starter Dustin May. The Rays would add a single later in the inning from Díaz. The Cardinals pulled one back in the third with a single from Victor Scott II. Díaz would strike again with an RBI double in the fourth, then score on Jonathan Aranda’s double, who would then score on Cedric Mullins’ double. A three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth from Jordan Walker cut the Rays’ lead to two, but the Cardinals would get no closer. Díaz added RBI singles in the final two innings, and not even eighth-inning home runs by Nolan Gorman and Pedro Pagés were able to close the gap as the Cardinals experienced their first loss of the year.
May lasted four innings, allowing six runs on ten hits and one walk, striking out three. Former Cardinal Steven Matz picked up the win, allowing four runs on six hits and one walk across five innings, striking out a pair.
The Cardinals are now 2-1 on the year and remain in St Louis as they prepare to welcome the New York Mets on Monday evening. First pitch is at 6:45 p.m., with Kyle Leahy getting the start for St Louis against Clay Holmes.
