The St. Louis Cardinals couldn’t generate any offense, falling 4-0 in the series opening with the Detroit Tigers Friday afternoon at Comerica Park.

The Redbirds only mustered five hits, three of them against Detroit starter Framber Valdez, who picked up the win with six scoreless innings. The Tigers took the lead in the fourth after Dillon Dingler hit a two-run homer off Michael McGreevy. The Tigers added another run in the fifth, which was charged to McGreevy, and another in the sixth off George Soriano. McGreevy took the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings of work.

Iván Herrera, Alec Burleson, and Thomas Saggese each recorded a hit and a walk in the losing effort.

The Cardinals drop to 4-3 on the season. St. Louis will look for a bounce back start from Dustin May in the second game of the series Saturday afternoon. Former Cardinal Jack Flaherty will start for Detroit. First pitch is at 12:10 p.m.
