Mizzou alumna Sophie Cunningham is staying in America’s Crossroads this summer, as the guard has signed a new one-year deal with the Indiana Fever.
Cunningham was traded to the Fever prior to last season, where she made waves as an enforcer for teammates Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston, and Lexie Hull. Cunningham scored 257 points and grabbed 105 rebounds in just 30 games for the Fever, as her season was cut short by an MCL tear. She proved instrumental in the Fever’s Commissioner’s Cup Championship run, scoring 13 points and claiming seven rebounds in the title game. Despite injuries to Cunningham and Clark, the Fever were able to advance to the WNBA semifinals last fall.
Cunningham re-joins the Fever alongside Hull on new deals, allowing Indiana to retain their core players ahead of the season starting May 9. Questions had circulated about whether Cunningham would return to the Fever, or even find a new team. Last week, she had signed a deal with one of the league’s broadcast partners to become a special contributor during their coverage.
