The Marshall Municipal Utilities Board of Public Works approved adjustments to its water rates during its meeting on Thursday, April 16.

The last change MMU approved came in 2019, when a ten percent water volume increase was implemented. Since that time, the Water Department has experienced significant increases in operating costs. MMU also says an increase is necessary to address critical infrastructure needs within the water treatment plant and distribution system. The Board of Public Works met with members of Marshall City Council during a work session on March 11 to discuss the need for the increase.

Board members approved a 20 percent increase to the water volume rate as well as varying increases in the meter size rate. The new meter rates will be $14 for meters one inch or less, $29 for two inches, $55 for three to four inches, and $70 for anything larger than four inches. Controller Tony Bersano says the average residential customer using 4,000 gallons per month would see an increase of approximately $5.98 per month.

The motion was approved and will now be presented to the Marshall City Council during its next meeting on Tuesday, April 21. If approved, the new rates would be effective with the June 2026 billing cycle.

The board’s next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 29.
