
It took only five innings for St Paul Lutheran to dispose of crosstown rival Concordia as the Saints beat the Orioles, 11-1 in high school baseball action heard Tuesday, Apr. 21 on KMMO AM.
Scoring in every inning but the third, St Paul spotted the visitors an early 1-0 lead before dominating their opponent the rest of the way by tallying 11 unanswered runs. The Saints put three on the board in the first inning, then added two more in the second prior to scoring once during the fourth and finally five more times in the fifth. St Paul made the most of every opportunity they had as eight of their runs came with two out in a given frame.
The victory serves as the Saints’ ninth in 10 outings so far this spring, enabling then to wrap up regular-season I-70 Conference play with a mark of 5-1, That gives them a tie for first with Lone Jack in the final standings. The loss dropped Concordia to 3-3 in league action and 7-6 overall.
A single by Aiden Frerking, a two-base error and an RBI single from Caleb Fuehring handed the Orioles a quick 1-0 lead. St Paul overcame that with a two-run double from Ethan McKeage and an RBI single by Sam Moenkhoff giving the Saints a 3-1 advantage after one stanza. In the second, Jayden Battista and Walker Bodenstab both provided run-scoring base knocks to widen the gap to 5-1. Later in the fifth, the Saints put an end to things with five runs, courtesy of three hits, two hit batsmen and two errors, bringing down the curtain.
Both sides used three pitchers along the way. St Paul mustered their 11 runs on 10 hits while making two miscues. Walker Bodenstab pitched the first two frames for his side as he banged out four singles and drove in two runs at the plate. Creyton Sheets and Gus Sayre both scored twice for the winners while Bodenstab, Ethan McKeage and Micah Truwe all chipped in with two RBI as well.
Concordia was limited to only one run on five hits. Meanwhile, their downfall was the six errors they committed in addition to throwing four wild pitches.
Offensively, the Orioles were paced by Aiden Frerking who had two singles and scored once while Caleb Fuehring drove in the losing side’s only tally.
