The Marshall City Council will swear in two new members Thursday, Apr. 23, two days later than initially planned, and that’s just part of the busy agenda ahead of them.
Gavin Mills and Michael Varner will join the council Thursday evening after winning their respective seats in the April 7 municipal election, alongside incumbents Carter Fawkes and Jim Papreck. Mills ran unopposed in Ward One, while Varner emerged ahead of Aaron Gibson and Mike Mills with the most write-in votes, according to the Missouri Secretary of State’s office. Additional correspondence with the office led to the city postponing the meeting initially scheduled for Tuesday evening.
However, most of the business on Thursday’s agenda will come before the outgoing council. That includes consideration of bids for this summer’s cold mill and overlay program, which will be covered by proceeds from the new half-cent transportation sales tax when it takes effect later this year. The council will also consider a water rate increase sought by Marshall Municipal Utilities and an appointment to the park board.
Thursday’s Marshall City Council meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the City Office Building.
