Days into his term as Sedalia’s new mayor, Traves Williams has vetoed a measure that would have the city’s garbage disposed at a landfill outside Warrensburg.

Williams listed a number of issues he had with the ordinance in a note that was included with the packet for the Sedalia City Council meeting Monday, May 4. Among those objections was the additional $2 per ton that Show-Me Landfill would charge, along with added fuel costs, travel time, landfill hours, and equipment limitations within the department.

The previous council adopted the agreement at their April 20 meeting, prior to adjourning sine die. According to a memo included with the council’s packet for that meeting, the Public Works Committee acknowledged that GFL Environmental’s bid was for $31 per ton for Sedalia to continue depositing their solid waste at GFL’s landfill just west of the city, compared to $33 for Show-Me Landfill. However, the committee cited sanitation staff’s concerns about rough haul roads, poor dumping conditions, and inefficient turnaround times at GFL. The committee also noted that a week-long trial of Show-Me Landfill resulted in an additional use of 300 gallons of fuel, but that staff found improved site conditions and more efficient operations.

By law, the council will have the opportunity to consider an override of Williams’ veto when they meet Monday at 6:30 p.m. Also Monday, the council will consider an ordinance updating the city’s wastewater pretreatment requirements, a grant from West Central Missouri Solid Waste Management District F to cover the installation of an electrical connection to a new glass pulverizer, and repealing an ordinance that awarded a sidewalk replacement contract in January.
