A leadoff home run and two bases-loaded RBI hits gave the Kansas City Royals a four-run fourth inning, en route to a 6-2 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Monday, May 4 at Kauffman Stadium, their fourth win in a row.

After Michael Wacha allowed a two-run home run in the second to Cleveland’s David Fry, Bobby Witt Jr led off the fourth inning with a home run to left field, slicing the lead in half. Two batters later, Salvador Perez delivered a single that went through the legs of second baseman Travis Bazzana, allowing Vinnie Pasquantino to score the tying run. The Royals then loaded the bases with a Carter Jensen single and Lane Thomas walk. Cleveland starter Tanner Bibee was able to strike out Jac Caglianone and Isaac Collins, but he then gave up a single to Nick Loftin that scored Perez and Jensen. Caglianone added a solo home run in the sixth, while Pasquantino drove in a run in the seventh to cap the scoring.

Wacha limited the Guardians to four hits, striking out three while allowing a walk in his seven-inning start for his third win of the year. Bibee took his fifth loss of the season, going just four innings and allowing four runs on five hits and two walks, but striking out four.

While the Royals are three games under .500, they are now just a game-and-a-half behind Cleveland for the AL Central lead. Game two of the four-game series is Tuesday at 6:40 p.m., with Stephen Kolek expected to get his first start of the year for Kansas City, while Cleveland will have Gavin Williams take the bump. Pregame coverage begins at 6 p.m. on KMMO-FM 102.9.
