The Kansas City Royals’ winning streak was snapped at five with a 3-1 loss Wednesday night to the Cleveland Guardians, but the attention was on starter Cole Ragans after he lasted just three innings.

Ragans was lifted after throwing 58 pitches, including four strikeouts while allowing a hit and two walks. MLB.com is reporting Thursday morning that Ragans complained of tightness in his left triceps and just above the elbow; he is set for further testing and evaluation today. The injury put the task of holding onto a slim lead on the bullpen, after Salvador Perez delivered a sacrifice fly that brought home Bobby Witt Jr in the bottom of the third. Luinder Avila pitched for two innings, where in the fifth an RBI single by Chase DeLauter brought home two runs for Cleveland to take the lead. David Fry added an RBI in the eighth with a groundout that scored José Ramírez.

Kansas City was limited to four hits in the game, only having runners in scoring position for two recorded at-bats. Joey Cantillo claimed the win with a five-inning start, allowing the lone run on three hits and three walks while recording a strikeout. Closer Cade Smith gave up a single with one out in the ninth, but struck out the next two batters to secure his ninth save of the year.

The Royals fall to 17-20, now 1.5 games behind Cleveland for the AL Central lead. They’ll look to claim the series win Thursday afternoon with Seth Lugo on the mound, going against Slade Cecconi. Pregame is at 12:30 p.m. on KMMO AM 1300, with first pitch at 1:10 p.m.
