The Pettis County Prosecutor’s Office has filed charges against the Sedalia man who led officers on a brief chase through a Sedalia neighborhood Wednesday, May 6.
A probable cause statement accuses 33-year-old Justin Strickland of refusing to stop when an officer sought to question him about a reported domestic disturbance at a home near the intersection of East 10th and South Garfield. Officers arrived at the home before 10 a.m. to visit with residents, who said the incident was not physical in nature. That’s when Strickland left the home and told officers that there had been physical contact, but refused to elaborate or stop and explain when asked by officers. One of the officers was standing by the side of Strickland’s truck when Strickland allegedly began reversing it, striking the officer. The officer continued giving commands for Strickland to leave the truck, in the process breaking one of the truck’s windows, but Strickland fled the scene.
A chase ensued, with the officer following Strickland down South Garfield. Strickland allegedly stopped at the stop sign at East 16th, only to back rapidly into the officer’s patrol vehicle. As Strickland began to pull away, the officer is reported to have fired his duty weapon toward Strickland’s pickup. The pickup went west on 16th Street for a couple blocks before stopping near South Arlington. Officers arrested Strickland and took him to a nearby hospital for treatment. The officer was also treated at the hospital for neck pain and released.
Strickland now faces two counts of assault, aggravated fleeing, leaving the scene of an accident, property damage, and resisting arrest. Officers noted that no charges were applicable to the initial domestic disturbance. He’s in the Pettis County Jail with no bond allowed, and an initial court date pending. The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control continues to investigate.
