Last year’s NWSL Golden Boot winner finally got her first goal of the year, then proceeded to bag a hat trick, in the Kansas City Current’s 3-0 win Sunday, May 10 over the Chicago Stars at CPKC Stadium.
Striker Temwa Chawinga netted her first goal of the season in the 22nd minute, after midfielder Croix Bethune found the Malawian unmarked at the back post. Chawinga’s shot slipped past Chicago goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher for her first league goal in nearly seven months. Her next two goals came quickly in the second half, when in the 47th minute Michelle Cooper’s shot was deflected by Naeher, only for the ball to fall to a waiting Chawinga at the back post. Two minutes later, Cooper would flick a pass over the Chicago back line, toward a charging Chawinga, who sent a half-volley into the back of the net.
Chawinga’s goals highlighted a strong offensive effort by the Current that, despite slightly trailing in possession, outshot the Stars 18-11 and recorded nine shots on goal. Lorena recorded six saves in the shutout, as the Current advance to 12 points on the season and now sit sixth in the NWSL. KC will host the Houston Dash next Friday at 7 p.m.
