The Kansas City Royals will make their way down Interstate 55 having suffered a sweep at the hands of the Chicago White Sox.

Despite scoring early, the Royals allowed the White Sox to respond just as fast, and failed to capitalize on opportunities in their 6-2 loss at Rate Field on Thursday, May 14, falling to last in the AL Central. The Royals took an early lead with runners on the corners with no one out, with Maikel Garcia scoring on Lane Thomas’ sacrifice fly. Despite allowing a stolen base and hit-by-pitch, starter Anthony Kay struck out Salvador Perez and Vinnie Pasquantino to curb the Royals threat.

Randall Grichuk blasted a two-run home run in the home half of the frame off Kris Bubic, then accounted for two more runs in the third with his RBI single to center field. Chase Meidroth added an RBI in the next frame, sending a ground ball to center field. Garcia added to the Royals tally in the seventh when his groundout scored Kyle Isbel, but the Royals would add no more, leaving eight on base including going 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.

Bubic lasted just four innings in the loss, allowing five runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four. Kay pitched into the seventh, posting a quality start of two runs on six hits with two walks, also recording four punchouts.

It’s now to St Louis and Busch Stadium for MLB’s Rivalry Weekend, as the Royals will face the Cardinals. First pitch is at 7:15 p.m., with pregame from the Royals Radio Network beginning at 6:30 p.m. on KMMO-FM 102.9.
