Two Florida residents are facing felony charges for allegedly assaulting a law-enforcement officer last weekend in Lafayette County.
According to a probable-cause statement, on February 3, a law-enforcement officer was dispatched to Walmart in Higginsville in reference to two individuals allegedly trying to scam the business by returning items they did not purchase.
Upon arrival, the officer spoke with 24-year-old Jasmine Gainous and 21-year-old Carlos Williams, both of Tampa, FL. The suspects began to flee where the officer reportedly tackled Williams to the ground in an attempt to apprehend the subject. Gainous reportedly deployed a pepper spray in the officer’s face. Williams reportedly was shouting “shoot him” as employees came to the aid of the officer, and eventually both subjects were apprehended.
Online court documents say Gainous and Williams each is charged with a Class D Felony for Third-Degree Assault-Special Victim and a misdemeanor for resisting arrest. Bond for Williams has been set at $35,000, and for Gainous at $20,000 .
Each subject is scheduled to appear for arraignment hearings at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, February 21, at Lafayette County Circuit Court in Lexington.
