Multiple fire departments were dispatched to douse a residential structure fire in Johnson County on Tuesday, March 10.
According to the Johnson County Fire Protection District, at 2:44 a.m. JCFPD’s Stations 1, 4 and 10 were dispatched to an address in the 900 block of NE 175 Road (rural Knob Noster). Mutual aid from the Warrensburg Fire Department responded later into the incident.
As crews arrived, they located extensive fire involvement in the attic which had breached the roof of the structure. The roof began collapsing and the fire spread to the floor below. The fire appears to have started in the attic above the kitchen. Around 5 p.m. the day before, the homeowners had a stove top fire they thought they had extinguished completely, but it appears flames entered the attic through the stove hood where they smoldered.
The two occupants in the residence were alerted to the fire by their smoke alarms, waking them from their sleep. They exited the structure and were not injured.
Officials say: “When you see posts or advertisements about changing batteries and making sure your smoke alarms are operational, it isn’t a joke. Without them, this morning’s incident could’ve been even more tragic.”
