A Lafayette County town’s residents are mourning the death of a town official.

According to the Wellington-Napoleon Fire Protection District, Wellington Mayor Rick Peterson died Monday afternoon.

Peterson spent his life serving Wellington either with the city itself or in the Wellington-Napoleon Fire Protection District. He was elected the Mayor of Wellington in 1990.

All of the flags around town will be flown at half-staff for the next 10 days in honor of Peterson.
