The Santa Fe Lady Chiefs laid claim to the Class 1, District 13 Volleyball Championship on Thursday night by sweeping Sacred Heart in three sets on the Lady Gremlins’ floor.

Santa Fe won 25-22, 25-18, 25-15, as it defeated its Sedalia opponent for the second time this season.

The Lady Gremlins were trying to spring an upset similar to the one they enjoyed two seasons ago when they shocked the top-seeded Lady Chiefs
in a 2018 district title match at Santa Fe.

Thursday night, Santa Fe grabbed the upper hand in game one and led 20-11 before Sacred Heart went on an 11-3 run to slice the deficit to one, 23-22. Then the Lady Chiefs were able to tally the next two points for a 25-22 win.

Game two saw Sacred Heart lead 5-0 and 10-8 when Santa Fe scored 14 of the next 15 points to go on top 22-11 before coasting to a 25-18 victory.

In the final set, Santa Fe led 15-12 when the I-70 Conference champion went on a 9-1 run for a 24-13 lead and eventually won 25-15.

The loss snapped a 10-match winning streak for the Lady Gremlins as they ended their year at 20-8-1.

Meanwhile, Santa Fe won for the 18th time in its last 21 matches, improving to 22-3-2. The Lady Chiefs now meet St. Joseph Christian Saturday afternoon in a sectional match at St. Joseph.
