On Tuesday, August 24, the Sedalia Police Department took a theft report in the 1100 block of South State Fair Boulevard. The victim reported that someone stole several items from his unlocked vehicle. Among the items stolen were multiple credit and debit cards, as well as cash, and a suspect was soon developed.

On Wednesday, August 25, officers with the Crime Resolution Unit were able to locate the suspect during a vehicle check. The suspect was brought to the Police Department and questioned by the Criminal Investigation Bureau. The suspect was arrested and transported to the Pettis County Jail where he was placed on a 24-hour hold.

According to court documents, 21-year-old Tanner J. Leary, of Sedalia, is charged with felonies for stealing and fraudulent use of a debit or credit device. Bond is set at $15,000 cash or surety.

Leary’s initial hearing is pending at Pettis County Circuit Court.

Authorities urge residents to remember to lock their vehicles. They say, “Also, be sure to remove any valuable items from your vehicle. Items commonly stolen from vehicles include money/change, firearms, electronics, GPS devices, credit cards, etc. The vast majority of vehicles are unlocked when these thefts occur. If you are the victim of someone stealing from your vehicle, please make a police report. Oftentimes the suspect is arrested with random items that we believe to be stolen from vehicles, but we have no reports to connect the items to.”
