An arrest has been made in relation to break-ins reported at Lafayette County businesses.

A press release says on August 18, Odessa Police personnel received multiple reports from three local businesses regarding burglaries that had occurred. During those incidents, documents, electronic equipment and an undisclosed amount of U.S. currency was stolen.

Surveillance video and photographs were obtained during the initial investigation as well as some forensic evidence. An unidentified male suspect was a person of interest in the case. Detectives worked to identify him through intelligence databases.

In the following months, Odessa detectives worked with other law-enforcement agency investigators to develop leads and clues. It is believed the suspect was involved in other financial institution burglaries in the area.

During the night of October 22, and early morning hours of October 23, Odessa officers were on routine patrol when they observed the same male suspect. It appeared the suspect was casing neighborhood buildings and vehicles. Odessa officers worked through covered surveillance and foot patrol and ultimately stopped the suspect vehicle for traffic violations. The suspect attempted to discard alleged burglary tools. Detectives made an arrest in the case after further review confirmed the suspect was involved in the August 18 burglaries.

Authorities say this case is an ongoing investigation.

The Lafayette County Prosecutor’s Office has charged George Cannon, of Leavenworth, Kansas, with three counts of burglary, possession of burglary tools, possession of marijuana, and driving with a suspended license. He currently is being held at the Lafayette County Jail on a $15,000 cash or surety warrant.

Cannon’s initial hearing is pending at Lafayette County Circuit Court.
