The MVC Education Division participated in an early literacy campaign, Jumpstart’s Read for the Record.

According to a press release, this event brings millions of adults and children together to read the same book on the same day all around the United States. This year, Jumpstart’s Read for the Record was committed to meeting readers where they are: at home, in the classroom, in their communities, in-person and virtually.

Incorporating this initiative in Saline County was spearheaded by MVC Associate Professor, Peggy Sherman’s EDU 372 course.

Sherman says, “My goal is to help ‘raise readers’ in our community and shine a light on the importance of early literacy. We’re lucky to have so many area schools that share that same goal and participate. It’s also important to educate our Missouri Valley College early childhood education majors on the importance and many benefits of early literacy by participating in this event.”

School officials say the goal set for October 28, was reaching 200 students. Sherman announced they far exceeded that goal.

Participating Saline County schools included Benton Elementary, Southeast Elementary, Hardeman School, Spainhower School, Orearville School, Miami School and Slater Early Childhood & Elementary.
