Due to the repair work taking longer than first thought after a fire on November 17, Marshall High School will not be able to be used in its full capacity for the rest of this academic year, so MHS Principal Christy Jones says the district will need to pivot.

During the school board meeting on Tuesday, December 14, Jones presented a plan for the rest of the school year, provided an agreement can be worked out with the city for the Martin Community Center to be utilized for part of the high school’s students. Jones said district personnel met with Marshall City Administrator JD Kehrman to see if the city can work with the district on the potential cost because currently the price tag to rent the building is $665 per day.

Jones said the idea is for students to be in seat for learning as much as possible.

Jones said students will be expected to be in class, whether in seat or via Google Classroom (Tuesdays and Thursdays) five days a week.

Due to a previously-planned event at the Martin Community Center on January 5, Jones said the new plan will begin on January 7, provided an agreement can be pounded out. Jones said the Marshall City Council is scheduled to discuss the issue during its next meeting on Monday, December 20.

According to unofficial minutes from the meeting, the rent cost will be covered by the district’s insurance.
