A Marshall man has been charged with a felony for domestic assault after an incident on June 15.

According to the Marshall Police Department, Kelly Coates and a female juvenile got into a fight after she left his residence without her permission. Coates told authorities that he was restrained the juvenile to prevent himself from being hit or kicked.

Several juvenile witnesses to the incident told authorities that Coates allegedly grabbed the victim by the throat and threw her to the ground during the altercation. The victim began punching and kicking Coates in an attempt to get away. Coates was also reportedly heard saying “this has been a long time coming” when the victim began to confront Coates.

Police also analyzed photos and a video of the victim’s injuries and the altercation. Coates reportedly has a history of domestic violence.

Court documents say Coates is charged with a felony for domestic assault in the second degree. Bond has been set at $7,500 cash or surety with conditions.

Coates has an initial appearance scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 21 at Saline County Circuit Court.
