Last week, the National Park Service designated 11 communities as American World War II Heritage Cities, It is an honor Johnson County and the City of Warrensburg share a joint designation since only one city can be designated in each state or territory.

World War II heritage is rich with the Sedalia Glider Base (Whiteman Air Force Base) and the V-12 Navy Program when it was campus.

Citizens volunteered their time and efforts to support the USO in Warrensburg and the Red Shield Club in Knob Noster, which provided a home away from home to service members.

After the war, memorials were dedicated, and the university alumni created the Alumni Memorial Chapel to the memory of those who fought.

Johnson County’s World War II history is remembered through displays and collections at the Johnson County Historical Society, McClure Archives and University Museum, and Leeton Museum
