Herbert Eugene Smith, Sr., 90, of Slater, died Thursday, January 25,

2024 at Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital in Columbia.

 

Visitation will be Tuesday, January 30, 2024 from 1:00 until 4:00 P.M.

at Weiker Funeral Home in Slater. Military rites will follow.  Burial will be at a later date in Mount Moriah Cemetery in Slater.  Memorials are suggested to the Wounded Warrior Project in care of the funeral home.

 

Born July 24, 1933 in Gilliam, he was the son of the late Robert Henry Smith and Eva Odell Piper Smith.  He was married to Estella Marie Smith, and she survives.  On March 25, 1977, he married Janie White, and she preceded him in death on March 6, 2006.

 

He is survived by three sons, Herbert E. Smith, Jr. of Memphis, Tennessee, Kenneth T. Smith of Olive Branch, Mississippi, and William J.

Parker, Jr. of Slater; ten grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Felicia A. Sanders; five brothers, Billy Smith, Jettie Smith, Bing Smith, Sr., Charles Wayne Smith, and Robert Smith; and three sisters, Alice Jordan, Ida Butner, and Glenda Smith.

 

Mr. Smith was a member of The Church of Christ in Marshall, and has served as an AA Sponsor.  He retired after twenty years of active service as a Technical Sergeant in the United States Air Force. Following his military service, he worked for twenty years at Wilson Foods in Marshall, and had also worked at the Marshall Habilitation Center and McCarthy Chevrolet.
