The Marshall City Council convened in regular session yesterday, with Councilman Charles Guthrey delivering the report on police and fire department activities.

Guthrey shared that the police department conducted 85 traffic stops resulting in 4 arrests and 4 citations, with the municipal court executing 20 warrants.

The department responded to 1,579 officer calls for service, averaging 51 calls per day, and filed 143 reports, leading to 28 arrests.

Guthrey emphasized the importance of locking vehicles to prevent theft, as incidents of theft from unlocked vehicles have been reported in Marshall.

On the fire department front, Chief Sheldon Kerksiek proposed a modification to the ordinance governing firefighter employment.

Currently, employees must reside within five road miles of the city limits or less. Kerksiek recommended extending the distance to 10 statute miles from the city limits to broaden the pool of potential firefighter recruits.
