
High School Baseball
The MSHSAA State Championships for Classes Five and Six concluded Saturday afternoon at the Ozark Mountain Sports Complex in Ozark.
In the state’s largest classification, Blue Springs got past Lafayette of Wildwood in an 11-10 slugfest to win the Class Six title. Last year’s champions Liberty North finished third, defeating Francis Howell 4-0. In Class Five, Willard won the state title with a 5-1 victory over Webster Groves. Kearney claimed third with a 1-0 win against Fort Zumwalt South.
High School Girls’ Soccer
All four classes of girls’ soccer crowned their state champions Saturday at World Wide Technology Park in Fenton.
Summit Christian Academy blanked Lutheran St Charles 1-0 to win the Class One title, while Saxony Lutheran of Jackson defeated Laquey 2-0 for third. In Class Two, Notre Dame de Sion of Kansas City defeated Helias Catholic 3-1 for the state title. The Whitfield School of St Louis took care of Logan-Rogersville 2-0 to claim third. The Class Three title went to Cor Jesu Academy after their 3-0 victory over Rockwood Summit. Fort Zumwalt South overwhelmed St Michael the Archangel of Lee’s Summit for third, 5-0. Nerinx Hall needed double overtime to wrap up the Class Four title, defeating Eureka 2-1. Lee’s Summit earned third with a 3-1 victory over Blue Springs South.
Major League Soccer
St Louis City SC led three times against Inter Miami, but a goal and assist from Argentine superstar Lionel Messi contributed to a 3-3 draw Saturday night in Florida.
Meanwhile, Sporting Kansas City remain in the MLS basement, as they fell to Minnesota United 3-1 in the Twin Cities. Johnny Russell came off the bench at halftime to net the lone goal for Sporting, whose league losing streak is now at six.
St Louis currently sit 11th in the Western Conference on 17 points, two points outside of playoff position, while Sporting are in last place with just 11 points.
UFL
Playoff football will return to St Louis a week earlier, as the Battlehawks held on to defeat the San Antonio Brahmas on Saturday afternoon 13-12. The two wrap up the UFL regular season at 7-3 and will meet again June 9th at 6 p.m. to determine the XFL Conference Championship. The game will again take place at The Dome at America’s Center in St Louis, which is also hosting the UFL Championship on June 16th.
Hockey
The Kelly Cup is even at one game apiece after the Kansas City Mavericks defeated the Florida Everblades 5-1. Game Three will be Wednesday night in Fort Myers.
Meanwhile, the Everblades’ NHL affiliate is on their way to the Stanley Cup Finals for the second straight year. The Florida Panthers locked up the Prince of Wales Trophy with a 2-1 win Saturday night over the New York Rangers, winning the Eastern Conference title four games to two. Meanwhile, Edmonton can close out the Western Conference finals this evening at 7 p.m. when they host Dallas.
NASCAR
Michael McDowell is on the pole for today’s Enjoy Illinois 300 at the World Wide Technology Raceway outside St Louis. The green flag drops at 2:30.
