Masyn Winn’s two-run home run proved to be the difference in the St Louis Cardinals’ 7-6 win in 12 innings over the Miami Marlins on Monday night at loanDepot Park in Miami.
The Cardinals opened the scoring in the fifth with a home run from Michael Siani, but the Marlins knotted the game up in the sixth with a triple. Iván Herrera gave the Cardinals the lead back in the eighth with a two-run triple, followed by a single from Brenden Donovan. Bryan De La Cruz tied the game back up in the bottom of the frame with a three-run home run off JoJo Romero, who was brought in to relieve starter Sonny Gray. The two teams exchanged a run each in the 11th. The Marlins had a chance to tie in the bottom of the 12th, when Nick Gordon’s hit to open the inning was ruled a triple after replay determined that the ball was nudged into the outfield wall by Dylan Carlson. However, Carlson would turn a double play on the next batter, when he caught a liner and threw to Pedro Pagés to get Gordon out at the plate.
Andrew Kittredge pitched the 11th and 12th innings to claim his first win of the season, allowing one hit with both his runs unearned. The Cardinals now have a winning record of 36-35, 5.5 games behind Milwaukee in the NL Central. Game two of the series at Miami is Tuesday afternoon, with first pitch at 5:10.
