Saline County Commissioners announced at Thursday morning’s session that the county is now renting nine HVAC units to maintain hospitable temperatures for inmates and deputies at the county jail.

Sheriff Cindi Mullins says the rentals are needed because of delays in renovations following a fire at the jail in January.

Northern District Commissioner Stephanie Gooden says commissioners remain at odds with the insurance company.

Gooden says the units will cost the county $15,840.74 to rent. Commissioners also spent part of this morning’s session reviewing a list of possible items to drop from the proposed welcome center at the Marshall Junction. Gooden says that follows the commission’s decision to reject all bids submitted last month.

Cost-saving measures that Gooden says were suggested include reducing the height of the building, not planting new trees, or eliminating a family restroom from the plans.

The Saline County Commission will be in special session Friday at 10 a.m. to discuss the Pioneer Trails Hazard Mitigation Plan.
