Bobby Witt Jr’s fly ball to center-left field fell just short of clearing the fence, resulting in the Royals shortshop finishing second to the Dodgers’ Teoscar Hernandez in the 2024 Home Run Derby on Monday night in Arlington, Texas.

Witt, who will make his first All-Star Game appearance Tuesday night not far from where he grew up, impressed the crowd by belting 20 home runs in the first round of the derby, outpacing two-time champion Pete Alonzo as well as Adolis Garcia, Gunnar Henderson, and Marcell Ozuna. Witt outlasted Jose Ramirez 17-12 in the first semifinal, while Hernandez needed a swing-off to defeat Alec Bohm in the other semifinal. Hernandez set the pace in the final, collecting 11 home runs in two minutes before adding three in the bonus round. Witt matched Hernandez’ pace late, but was only able to launch two bonus balls into the seats. Hernandez picked up the $1 million prize to become the first Dodger to win the Home Run Derby.

Witt, along with Seth Lugo, Salvador Perez, Cole Ragans, will suit up for the American League this evening, while the Cardinals’ Ryan Helsley will be in the bullpen for the National League. Pirates rookie Paul Skenes will get the start for the NL while the AL sends Corbin Burnes of the Orioles to the bump. First pitch from Globe Life Field will be around 7 p.m.
