Sporting Kansas City returned to a familiar place Wednesday at BC Place in Vancouver, British Columbia… the loss column, as Sporting fell 2-1 to the Vancouver Whitecaps.
Donning throwback jerseys from their earlier years as the Wizards, SKC found themselves trailing in the 34th minute after striker Brian White followed through on a shot blocked by goalkeeper Tim Melia. However, the goal was credited to Sporting defender Robert Voloder, who made contact with the ball before White could to direct the ball into goal. Voloder would also take the game’s only yellow card. Sporting’s Willie Agada picked up his fourth goal in as many contests, leveling the score in the 69th minute, only for Vancouver’s Fafa Picault to get his sixth goal of the year and the game winner seven minutes later.
Saint Louis City also experienced an own goal to start their road contest at Lumen Field in Seattle. Defender Tim Parker was on the wrong end of things in the 28th minute to put the Seattle Sounders on the board. Jonathan Bell collected the hosts’ second goal in the 49th minute to make the final score 2-0 for the Sounders, dooming City to their third straight loss and fourth in five games.
The two squads remain firmly toward the bottom of the MLS Western Conference standings, with Sporting 12th on 23 points and St Louis City 13th with 22 points. The two teams face off at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City this Saturday at 7:30.
