Sporting Kansas City and St Louis City SC were unable to claw themselves closer to a playoff position, drawing 1-1 on Saturday night at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City.

St Louis made their way onto the board just before halftime with a goal from Nökkvi Thórisson. Sporting pressed for much of the second half, ultimately breaking through with Willy Agada’s ninth goal of the season in the 73rd minute. Neither side could find the winner, leaving both team where they started near the bottom of the Western Conference standings.

Sporting remain a point ahead of St Louis, with SKC 12th on 24 points and St Louis City 13th on 23. The ninth and final playoff spot is currently held by Minnesota United with 33 points. MLS’ crossover challenge with Liga MX begins next weekend, with Sporting Kansas City hosting the Chicago Fire next Sunday and St Louis City visiting FC Dallas on Saturday evening.

The National Women’s Soccer League crossover challenge with Mexico’s women’s soccer league began this weekend, with the Kansas City Current pulling away from the Houston Dash 3-1 on Saturday night at CPKC Stadium. Michelle Cooper collected the second-fastest goal in franchise history when she put KC on the board in just 55 seconds. Houston would equailize in the 20th minute. The Current claimed the lead for good in the 68th minute off the foot of captain Lo’eau LaBonta. Kristen Hamilton added the insurance goal 15 minutes later.

The Current will host a pair of squads from Mexico in the next two rounds, with Pachuca visiting Kansas City next Saturday and the UANL Tigres wrapping up group play August 1st.
