The long ball was the main mode of offense for the St Louis Cardinals on Sunday afternoon, as four home runs contributed to their 6-2 win at Atlanta.
The Cardinals landed home runs in the second from Paul Goldschmidt and Alec Burleson in the third, before the Braves’ Jarred Kelenic sent one of his own into the stands in the bottom half of the third. Lars Nootbar and Willson Contreras also delivered solo home runs, while Burleson collected an RBI single in the fifth. The Braves also singled in a run in the home half of that inning. The Cardinals scored in the ninth inning on a throwing error.
Miles Mikolas picked up his eighth win of the year, going six innings and allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three. Ryan Helsley pitched a scoreless ninth, striking out two in a non-save situation.
The Cardinals are now 52-47, five games behind Milwaukee after the Brewers swept Minnesota. They also maintain position in the second wild card spot, 1.5 games ahead of a three-team logjam for the third spot between Arizona, the New York Mets, and San Diego. A half-game behind the logjam is Pittsburgh, whom the Cardinals will visit Monday evening. First pitch will be at 5:40 p.m.
