Back-to-back RBI hits off Cole Ragans in the sixth inning doomed the Kansas City Royals to a second straight loss Sunday, as they dropped the rubber match against the Chicago Cubs 7-3 at Kauffman Stadium.
The Royals would strike first, with a pair of RBI singles from Bobby Witt Junior and Hunter Renfroe in the first inning to make the score 2-0. The Cubs would tie it in the third off a double from Nico Hoerner. The Royals reclaimed the lead in the fourth when Freddy Fermin’s flyball to left field was ruled a home run after a Cubs fan reached out to catch it in front of the foul pole. With the infamy of the 2003 NLCS still ingrained in their folklore, the Cubs rallied in the sixth, with David Bote’s two-out double tying the game, followed by Pete Crow-Armstrong’s single bringing in the go-ahead run. The Cubs would pad their lead with three runs in the ninth.
Crow-Armstrong went three-for-four to lead the Cubs to the series win. Ragans allowed eight hits, including four doubles, while striking out seven in 5.2 innings of work in the loss.
The Royals are 57-48 and still in the third wild-card spot, one game ahead of Boston, while six games behind Cleveland in the AL Central. The Royals have more of the Windy City ahead of them, as they’ll pay a visit to a Chicago White Sox squad in the midst of a 14-game losing streak. First pitch from Guaranteed Rate Field is at 7:10 p.m., with pregame beginning at 6:30 on KMMO FM 102.9.
