The Kansas City Royals lost to the Detroit Tigers 6-5 in 11 innings Saturday evening, snapping a five-game winning streak as three pitchers recorded blown saves.
The Royals and Tigers exchanged runs in the sixth inning, with Vinnie Pasquantino homering in the visitors’ half of the frame, while Andy Ibáñez claimed an RBI single with two outs to end Michael Lorenzen’s first outing in a Royals uniform. The Royals would claim a 3-1 lead in the next inning with Paul DeJong’s 19th home run of the year. However, Hunter Harvey ended up blowing his first save opportunity as a Royal, giving up a leadoff home run to Bligh Madris, then a pair of doubles to tie the game. Relievers Kris Bubic and James McArthur also recorded blown saves, with McArthur giving up a lead-off triple in the 11th to Parker Meadows and the game-winning single to Wenceel Pérez to end up with the loss.
Bobby Witt Jr also saw a streak snapped, as he went hitless for the first time in 16 games. However, his sacrifice fly in the tenth gave the Royals a 4-3 lead. Three Royals recorded multiple hits, but were just one-for-five with runners in scoring position.
With Minnesota handing the White Sox their 19th consecutive loss, the Royals are now third in the AL Central, six games behind Cleveland and 2.5 games ahead of Boston for the third wild card spot. The Royals look to claim a series win against Detroit on Sunday afternoon at Comerica Park. Pregame on KMMO AM 1300 is at noon, with first pitch at 12:40 p.m.
