MJ Melendez needed only the first pitch from Shelby Miller to turn Sunday’s game at Comerica Park on its head.

Melendez came off the bench to send a three-run home run to right field, erasing the Detroit Tigers’ lead and replacing it with a 3-2 Kansas City Royals win Sunday afternoon. The home run off Miller countered Detroit’s runs in the second and fifth, and turned the Tigers’ committee of no-run pitching into Miller’s seventh loss of the season, as well as a series win for the Royals.

Michael Wacha lasted six innings and allowed both runs on seven hits and four walks, while striking out two. Chris Stratton retired the side in the eighth to claim his fourth win of the year, while Hunter Harvey secured his first save as a Royal.

Kansas City wrap up the road trip with a 6-1 mark and return to Kauffman Stadium with a 63-50 record, five games behind Cleveland in the AL Central and a half-game behind Minnesota for the second wild card spot. The Boston Red Sox make their way to The K on Monday evening for the start of a three-game series, looking to close the 2.5 game gap they have with the Royals in the wild card race. First pitch is at 7:10, with pregame at 6:30 on KMMO FM 102.9.
