Brady Singer allowed two home runs and an RBI single in the second inning as the Kansas City Royals were downed by the Minnesota Twins on Monday night at Target Field 8-3.
The Royals had struck early, with a Bobby Witt Jr home run in the first and an RBI single from Kyle Isbel in the second. But the Twins were able to bat around in the home half, as Austin Martin singled in a run to get Minnesota on the board, followed by Will Castro’s three-run shot to right field. Royce Lewis also had a home run off Singer. The Royals claimed a run back in the sixth when MJ Melendez beat the throw to the plate, but the Twins would add two in the seventh.
Singer’s six runs in the second were all earned, as he allowed eight hits and two walks, but struck out nine across five innings to go 8-8 on the year. Pablo López went six innings and recorded three runs on six hits while striking out five.
The Royals are now 65-54, five games behind Cleveland in the AL Central and 1.5 games behind Minnesota, while two games ahead of Boston for the third wild card spot. Game two against Minnesota is Tuesday evening at 6:40, with pregame coverage from 6 p.m. on KMMO-FM 102.9.
