Three first half goals were more than enough for the Kansas City Current to dispatch South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday night at CPKC Stadium.
Goals from Alexa Spaanstra, Michelle Cooper, and Vanessa DiBernardo provided the 3-0 result in favor of the hosts, advancing the Current to the Women’s Cup final. Goalkeeper Almuth Schult made her first appearance for the Current to claim a clean sheet, including a save on a shot from long distance in the 36th minute.
The Current will face Atlético de Madrid, who conceded a late goal to Kobe in the opening match of the Women’s Cup doubleheader, needing the penalty shootout to claim the win. The final is Saturday at 8 p.m., with Kobe and Mamelodi facing off for third place at 5 p.m.
