The Philadelphia Phillies claimed six runs and 11 hits off Royals starter Seth Lugo, and tagged the bullpen for another five runs, in an 11-3 drubbing of Kansas City on Sunday afternoon at Kauffman Stadium.

The NL East-leading Phillies picked up two runs in the third off RBI hits from Kyle Schwarber and Alec Bohm. The Royals’ Bobby Witt Jr responded with a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning. Schwarber claimed another RBI in the fourth with a groundout, countered by Maikel Garcia’s home run in the fifth. The Phillies chased Lugo out of the game in the sixth, after a Garrett Stubbs double and yet another Schwarber at-bat that yielded runs. MJ Melendez homered to lead off the sixth, but that would be all the Royals would score. The Phillies rung up reliever Will Smith for five runs in the eighth, capped by a Nick Castellanos two-run home run to left field.

Lugo suffered his eighth loss of the year, also giving up a walk in 5.1 innings while striking out three. Kolby Allard picked up his second win of the year, allowing two runs and eight hits while striking out five.

Thanks to the Cardinals’ late heroics, the Royals (72-58) remain tied for second with Minnesota, three games behind Cleveland in the AL Central while 4.5 games ahead of a Boston squad that was swept by the Diamondbacks. The Royals have no time to lick their wounds, as they’ll start a four game series against Cleveland on Monday afternoon, starting with a makeup game at 12:10 p.m. Pregame coverage on KMMO AM 1300 starts at 11:30 a.m.
