Jordan Walker’s home run in the fourth inning provided the insurance needed for Lance Lynn to secure a quality start in the St Louis Cardinals’ 3-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night at Busch Stadium, keeping the Redbirds’ slim playoff hopes alive.

Pittsburgh got on the board first in the second inning with Bryan De La Cruz’s home run, his 20th of the season. That would be the only blemish on starter Lance Lynn’s tally, as he allowed just four hits and two walks while fanning five in what might have been his final six innings of work at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals tied the game in the third on Luken Baker’s triple, then took the lead with Walker’s home run in the fourth. Nolan Arenado added insurance in the eighth with a sacrifice fly. Ryan Fernandez and Matthew Liberatore each pitched a scoreless inning for St Louis, followed by Ryan Helsley securing his 45th save of the year.

The Cardinals are now 76-75, and are technically still in the mix for the NL Central with Milwaukee losing Tuesday night to Philadelphia. They’re also seven games behind the Mets for the wild card. Game three of the four-game series against Pittsburgh is Wednesday evening, with first pitch at 6:45 p.m.
