Sedalia’s City Council will take another look at a proposed expansion of the city’s Chapter 353 Redevelopment Plan at its meeting Monday, Jan. 6.

The council voted Dec. 16 to postpone a decision after confusion arose over the availability of tax abatements for property owners. According to a release from city attorney Joe Lauber, tax abatements are available for property owners in an area covered by a 353 Redevelopment Plan, provided a government-funded corporation is in place to briefly assume ownership of the property to trigger the abatements. Tonight’s meeting will feature a presentation from Lauber about the purpose and structure of the plan. The expansion is not listed as an action item on Monday’s agenda. If the council approves expansion, the downtown area would become part of the city’s Midtown Redevelopment Area that presently covers most areas of the city east of Park Avenue and north of 16th Street.

Also at Monday’s meeting, the council will recognize this holiday’s Christmas Light Contest winners and consider budgeting at least $28,000 to fund the search for a new city administrator. Interim city administrator Matthew Wirt will receive recognition for 25 years of service to the city. Also up for consideration is a mutual aid agreement between the Sedalia Fire Department and Missouri Department of Conservation.

Sedalia’s city council meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 200 South Osage.

Elsewhere, if the weather allows, meetings are scheduled tonight for the Concordia Board of Aldermen at 5 p.m. The Higginsville Board of Aldermen and Carrollton Town Council are both scheduled for 6 p.m., while the Boonville City Council will convene at 7 p.m. The Moberly City Council meeting normally scheduled for Monday night has been pushed back to Wednesday evening at 6 p.m.
