The Lafayette County Commission has placed a sales tax question regarding 911 and dispatching services on the ballot for the April 8th election.

If passed, this half-cent sales tax would replace $1 fee on every phone line to fund dispatching services from the 911 Central Dispatch Center in Higginsville. Currently, various entities in Lafayette County also have to pay a fee for dispatching services each year. These entities include the cities of Alma, Bates City, Concordia, Corder, Lake Lafayette, Lexington, Napoleon, Odessa, Waverly, and Wellington, as well as many fire districts. Presiding Commissioner Harold Hoflander says this new tax could bring in around $1.7 million a year.

Hoflander also notes the money raised from the tax can be used to upgrade equipment at the dispatch center.

If approved, this tax will not have a sunset.
