The Kansas City Chiefs’ dream of a third straight Lombardi Trophy fell apart Sunday, Feb. 9, when the offense was hexed by an Eagles defense determined to deny the three-peat. Six sacks and three turnovers proved costly in the Chiefs’ 40-22 loss at Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans.
The Chiefs could only claim one first down in the first half, as the Eagles defense forced five punts, along with a Cooper DeJean pick-six and another interception in the red zone, to keep the Chiefs off the board. Meanwhile, Philadelphia’s Jalen Hurts recorded a rushing touchdown to open the scoring, and after the second interception tacked on a 12-yard touchdown pass to AJ Brown to make the score 24-0 at the half.
Most of Patrick Mahomes’ 21 completions and 257 passing yards came after the game was out of reach, including two touchdown passes to Xavier Worthy and a third to DeAndre Hopkins. Worthy finished the night with eight catches for 157 yards to lead the passing game, while Travis Kelce’s four catches for 39 yards surpassed Jerry Rice for most career Super Bowl receptions with 35. The run game was non-existent for the Chiefs, with just 11 carries for 49 yards, while Mahomes lost 31 yards on six sacks. Mahomes was also charged with a lost fumble in the third quarter.
MVP honors went to Hurts, who went 17 for 22 with 221 yards and two touchdown passes, while rushing for a third. Hurts was also the top rusher with 11 carries for 72 yards. Kicker Jake Elliott went four-for-four, including a 50-yarder and two from 48.
The Chiefs wrap up the season with a 17-3 record, and will have the 31st pick in April’s NFL Draft.
