As colder temperatures and winter weather returns to the area, Marshall Municipal Utilities is offering tips to help prevent your home’s water pipes from freezing or bursting.

Home owners should insulate pipes that are located in cold and drafty places in their home. Keep garage doors closed, especially if there are water supply lines in the garage. Residents should also seal air leaks that may let an icy blast reach your pipes.

Residents should also open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors during freezing temperatures to allow warmer air to circulate the plumbing. You can also allow drips from faucets to relieve pressure in pipes.

Other tips include:
-Leaving the heat on in your home no lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit if you plan to be away during cold weather.
-Disconnecting all outside hoses.
-Know the location of your main water shut-off valve in case of a burst.
