It might prove to be a frosty welcome back to St Louis for Blues goalkeeper Jordan Binnington and defender Colton Parayko, as the two helped Team Canada defeat the U.S. in overtime 3-2 on Thursday, Feb. 20 at the TD Garden in Boston to secure the 4 Nations Face Off trophy.
Binnington stopped 31 of Team USA’s 33 shots on goal, channeling comparisons to his performance on the same rink when the Blues won Game 7 of the 2019 Stanley Cup Finals. Binnington was the only goalie to start all four games in the midseason tournament, minding the net throughout Canada’s title run. He did allow goals from Brady Tkachuk in the first period that tied the game at one, as well as Jake Sanderson’s snapshot goal that gave the Americans the 2-1 lead. Nathan McKinnon opened the scoring for Team Canada, en route to MVP honors. Sam Bennett tied the game for Canada with six minutes left in the second period, and Connor McDavid netted the golden goal eight minutes into overtime.
Parayko logged nearly 18 minutes of ice time across 30 shifts, recording one of Canada’s 27 shots on goal.
The season resumes for the NHL on Saturday, which will see the Blues resume their home stand against the league-leading Winnipeg Jets and Team USA goalie Connor Hellebuyck. Puck drop at Enterprise Center is at 6 p.m.
