The Marshall Police Department is warning the public of a scam affecting residents who have driven through a toll recently.
The department says scammers are sending text messages pretending to be tolling agencies from coast to coast and demanding money.
Affected residents might get a text out of the blue that will show a dollar amount for how much you supposedly owe and include a link that takes you to a page to enter your bank or credit card info. Do not click on any links or respond to unexpected texts. This is likely a phishing scam, and a scammer will not only try to steal your money, but also get personal information to steal your identity.
Marshall Police encourages all residents to verify if any text they get is legit. Reach out to the state’s tolling agency using a phone number or website you know is real — not the info from the text. Residents should also report and delete unwanted text messages. Use your phone’s “report junk” option to report unwanted texts to your messaging app or forward them to 7726 (SPAM).
Once you’ve checked it out and reported it, delete the text.
